BMI Explained: What the Numbers Mean for Your Health
Body Mass Index is everywhere โ gym assessments, health checkups, insurance forms. Here's what the number actually measures, and where it falls short.
What is BMI?
BMI is a simple ratio: weight (kg) รท height (m)ยฒ. A person who is 170 cm tall and weighs 65 kg has a BMI of 22.5. It was devised in the 1830s by a Belgian statistician as a population-level screening tool โ and that's still what it's best at.
The categories
- Below 18.5 โ Underweight: may indicate insufficient nutrition or underlying conditions
- 18.5 โ 24.9 โ Normal: the range associated with the lowest population-level health risks
- 25.0 โ 29.9 โ Overweight: elevated risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and joint strain
- 30.0 and above โ Obese: significantly elevated health risks; medical guidance recommended
Where the boundaries come from
They're statistical, not magical. Large population studies found that disease risk curves bend upward around these thresholds. Someone at BMI 25.1 isn't suddenly unhealthy โ the categories are guideposts, and health risk changes gradually along the spectrum.
What BMI gets wrong
BMI can't see what your weight is made of. A muscular athlete may read "overweight" at 12% body fat, while someone with low muscle and high visceral fat may land in the "normal" range despite elevated risk. It also performs unevenly across ethnic groups โ South and East Asian populations tend to face elevated metabolic risk at lower BMIs, which is why some health systems use lower cutoffs (23 and 27.5) for these groups. Age matters too: older adults often do better slightly above the standard "normal" band.
Better companions to BMI
Waist circumference (over 94 cm for men, 80 cm for women signals elevated visceral fat), waist-to-hip ratio, body-fat percentage, and simple fitness markers like resting heart rate and blood pressure paint a fuller picture than any single number.

Frequently asked questions
Is BMI accurate for muscular people? Not really โ muscle is denser than fat, so muscular builds read high. Athletes should use body-fat measurements instead.
What's a healthy BMI for South Asians? Many guidelines use 18.5โ23 as "normal" and 23โ27.5 as "overweight" due to earlier metabolic risk.
Does age change my healthy BMI? Somewhat โ older adults often have better outcomes in the upper-normal range (23โ27).
